Alice

As my massage clients aged, I wanted to have a way to continue my relationships with them, and often times they required more than exercise and massages, so I got my CNA license. Since then I divide my time between massage therapy, personal training and caretaking for seniors. I love each of these professions and I am happy that I get to do them all.

A couple of days a week I take care of a lovely woman. Her name is Alice. Alice  has Parkinson’s and some dementia, but that doesn’t keep her down. Her daughter always lets’ me know how much her Mom loves our time together and how she carries on about our outings. It’s always a special time for me as well. This lady had  a very active and social life. She played tennis and enjoyed working out, so she loves to be active and go on adventures, which is a perfect fit for me !

I have lived in Brevard County for over 30 years now, and as a Mom I always took my daughter on excursions to local parks when she was a child, so I pride myself on knowing every water front park in the area. I know that Alice loves turtles so I particularly look for places where we can watch the turtles. Alice must have been a gardener at one time, she is someone who knows the names of every tree, plant and the types of soil they like. Flowering trees are her favorite, and mine too.

Because she was a school teacher and a very social Mother, she loves to see children, and say hello. We coo over the babies and tell the older siblings that we know they have a big job, being helpful with their younger siblings and helping their Mom. The older  children are happy when we include them, and the Mom’s appreciate our validation of their children. It’s one of those win win situations for us. We enjoy the children, and we get to spread a little joy.

Last week, as we strolled through a local park, we saw a young woman jogging. We smiled, clapped and cheered for her as she ran around the track. We move pretty slowly, so she actually made three loops around by the time we went around once. As she finished her run we were heading to our car. She stopped us and thanked us for cheering her on. She said it really helped her to keep going on a day when she would probably have been tempted to cut her run short.

It was lovely to realize that Alice and I are a dynamic team, enjoying life and spreading love and joy everywhere we go. That’s a mission I can enjoy, especially since it is in my nature to see the joy in everyday things. I have always been that way, and being allowed to do that while I help someone to continue enjoying their life is like earning interest in the karmic bank of spirituality. She enjoys her time with me because I help her to continue having adventures and  I am a loving presence in her life. As she is in mine.

Happy Fourth of July

About Brevard Massage

I have been a personal trainer and massage therapist for many years now. My specialty is getting people moving again. I have learned through the years that preventing injuries is as important as relieving pain after an injury. To that end, I have also learned Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Pilates.
