elderly falling in bathroom because slippery surfaces

Falls  really can be terrifying for the elderly and for their families. In fact I can’t think of anything that is more terrifying than receiving a phone call that your elderly parent has fallen.  No matter what your age is, you are transported to a feeling of helplessness as you race to the hospital or their home to make sure they are not injured. My own Mother had a fall a couple of years ago, and she was able to crawl to the phone and call my sister, but if she didn’t have the arm strength to pull herself like she did, I don’t know what would have happened to her.

It’s because of this that I advocate for core strength in everyone, regardless of their age. Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury and death among older people in the United States, and this health threat is likely to grow since 10,000 Americans now reach age 65 every day, a new federal report shows.

“Older adult falls are increasing and, sadly, often herald the end of independence,” CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said in an agency news release. “Health care providers can make fall prevention a routine part of care in their practice, and older adults can take steps to protect themselves.”

Older Americans had 29 million falls in 2014, causing 7 million injuries. Falls cost Medicare an estimated $31 billion a year, the CDC report revealed. Fall risk increases as aging people’s muscles weaken, they become less active and they develop chronic health issues, researchers have found.

Injury rates from falls are seven times higher for seniors with medical issues than for those who are healthy, the CDC reported. Taking multiple medications adds to the danger.

What can we do to prevent this? First of all, encourage your family members to be active, to get out and socialize and perhaps join some exercise classes. In Brevard and Indian River County there are resources where seniors can get together with other seniors and walk, swim, and even dance. Tai Chi and Qigong are also great exercise for lengthening and stretching muscles.

Next, remove things from the home which are common tripping hazards. Loose throw rugs, low stools, put small bells on cats and dogs so they don’t sneak up and present a tripping hazard. Make certain rooms are well lit.

The CDC urges doctors to make fall prevention part of routine office visits. We also have to do those things I already suggested and we need to proactively evaluate their choice of footwear, ensure their vision has been screened and make sure that carpeting and flooring is safe for their daily activities.  With these simple steps, we can reduce not only fall risks but also health care visits and expenses as well.
