When I first started my massage business, the public viewed massage as pampering, I, however, did not. I had worked as a unit clerk in a hospital, and I knew first hand that pills rarely cure pain, they just mask it. I always had enough understanding of the human body to know that massage and some of the other related arts had the power to not only relieve pain temporarily, with the right understanding of where the pain actually emanated from, I was able to help people stop having the pain altogether.
I found that more often than not, the source of people back and shoulder pain was actually a result of poor core strength, or a lack of stretching. the reason I learned how to train people in Pilates and Tai Chi was to help them to have fewer occurrences of pain in certain parts of their bodies because my clients had strengthened their cores, and also learned how to gently stretch their tightened muscles.
Us Health News reports:
“Once viewed as a luxury, massage is increasingly recognized as an alternative medical treatment. According to a recent consumer survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association, 77 percent of respondents said their primary reason for receiving a massage in the past year was medical or stress-related. Perhaps it’s not surprising, then, that medical centers nationwide now offer massage as a form of patient treatment. The American Hospital Association recently surveyed 1,007 hospitals about their use of complementary and alternative medicine therapies, and more than 80 percent said they offered massage therapy. Upwards of 70 percent said they used massage for pain management and relief.
“The medical community is more accepting of massage therapy than ever before,” says Jerrilyn Cambron, board president of the Massage Therapy Foundation. “Many massage therapists now have active, fruitful relationships with conventional care providers.”
If you have read some of the posts here on my blog, you will see that massage therapy has helped me to take clients who are in pain and having trouble just getting through every day life.Once they are on a regular massage schedule and they follow the advice I give them about stretching, and posture, they have less pain and begin to feel much better. When your posture isn’t just right, when you spend time favoring one side of your body over another because of pain or injury, each of those things trhwos you off balance. Massage, gentle exercise and a conscious effort to use your core will always help relieve the pain.
