I am not what anyone would consider a delicate person. I am big and strong and capable. I and my siblings are funny and kind and we are a big presence in any room. That’s a nice way of saying that we can be loud. But I am also kind and very tender hearted. I think people sometimes think that only those who look like waifs are kind. It’s not true.

This post is not about tooting my own horn. I dislike people who do that. I never do anything for anyone else for the sake of garnering praise or recognition. That’s not my way. I do things for people, young or old, big or little, of any race, creed or religion, because it makes me happy.

Lately, my realm has been filled with people in their late 20’s and early 30’s. They are getting married, having children, and I am enjoying my role as surrogate Grandma and Auntie. When I am out and about I will find various items I think will be just lovely for one of these people, or for their children. I purchase it, and I make an appointment to go by and  I give them their gifts. I get the pleasure of seeing their pleasure. We visit, we hug and I am on my way.

Recently a few of these people have asked me point blank, “Val, why are you being so good to me? Why do you bring me gifts, or food or clothes?” Dont’ get me wrong, these folks aren’t complaining when they ask this question, they are merely curious, and a little incredulous. The first time I heard this question, I was taken aback, confused. It took me a moment to gather my thoughts and give them an answer.

It goes something like this. When I was their age, I was fortunate enough to have been surrounded with people who mentored and nurtured me and my ambitions. I think it’s only right that I do the same for these young people whom I have watched grow up and become amazing adults.  I think it’s just a little sad that we can’t all take it for granted that we will help each other. Young or old or in the middle.

You see, most of those people who helped me along the way are now much older. and I help them. My Dad used to have a saying, “What goes around, comes around” I guess things are coming back around.

My reason for being good to people is simple. We should all be good to each other and support each other.

Is there a someone or two who you could go out of your way to be kind to?
