On Saturday, January 13, my friend and fellow instructor, Julie Klutinoty, and I, conducted a class where we demonstrated techniques which can be used to awaken muscles that can become stiff when they are not being used regularly. It was gratifying to see and hear the people’s responses to our instruction.
It is easy to forget that as we age and become more sedentary, we are allowing our bodies to atrophy. We explained that as we move less, we tend to overuse our large muscle groups and it results in a situation where we begin to experience pain and stiffness. This training will help you preven injury, help alleviate back pain, and strngthen your musles.
We used movements from both Yoga and Tai Chi to work the shoulder, back and thighs in order to restore some degree of flexibility to our participants. Every person had a different level of Yog a experince, so the class was not an advanced one, it just covered all the bases. We were pleased when at the end of the class, people asked when we are going to do it again.
And not one person was sore the next day. After a 3 hour session, that was good to hear.
I just hope people took the class to heart and will practice some of the movements we taught them as they go back to their normal routines.
Til next time, Valentina Boonstra, at your service.
